Ethanol and Biodiesel are the renewable substitutes for the fossil fuel based petrol and diesel.
Ethanol can be blended with petrol up to 10% with no changes required for the vehicle.
Ethanol is produced from any feedstock containing a sugar or starch based content.
European Union Member States will replace 5.75% of all transport fossil fuels (petrol and diesel) with biofuels by 2010.
In 2010 global production was 86.9 billion litres; EU production was 3.7 billion litres.
Brazil and US generate 88% of the world production. In Europe, France, Germany and Spain produce 66% of EU total.
EU legislation had a requirement of 120 million litres for Ireland in 2010 and will increase to 300 million litresin 2020.
Currently, 99% of demand is being imported, mostly from the UK.
